History

November 11, 1845: Church began at a meeting held at the home of Mr. William Hempstead.
January 5, 1846: Steps of organization completed. Church named the Old School Presbyterian Church of Galena.
October 1848: Church renamed South Presbyterian Church. It began with 21 members.
September 10, 1848: Present church building on Bench Street was completed and dedicated.
1854: German speaking Presbyterian Church was founded and met for a year in the South Presbyterian building until they built their own church.
July 16, 1855: The First German Evangelical Church of Galena was incorporated.
1929: German Language discontinued and name changed to the Hill Presbyterian Church.
September 18, 1960: South Presbyterian and Hill Presbyterian churches merged and became Westminster United Presbyterian Church.
2007: At present, the church has 103 active members, a Sunday school, two Bible study groups, a Presbyterian Women's group, the Christian Association of Retired Persons (CARP), many committees, and a choir.
